A new job title has been quietly showing up on LinkedIn, in revenue team org charts, and in startup hiring plans: GTM Engineer. It sits somewhere between a sales ops person, a marketing technologist, and a data engineer — and companies that have one tend to run leaner, faster outbound motions than those that don't.
But what does a GTM engineer actually do? Why does the role exist now, and not five years ago? And how do you know if you need one?
The problem that created the role
B2B go-to-market has always required three things: knowing who to target, knowing what to say, and having a reliable way to reach them. For most of the last decade, "knowing who to target" meant buying a list from ZoomInfo, exporting it into a CRM, and handing it to a BDR to call.

- CRM architecture — designing how data flows between tools, how attribution is tracked, and how the sales team's activities map to revenue outcomes.

How this is different from sales ops or RevOps
Sales ops and RevOps are focused on reporting, process optimization, and CRM hygiene. They answer questions like: how is the team performing? Where are deals getting stuck? Are we forecasting accurately?
A GTM engineer is more focused on building new capabilities than managing existing ones. They ask: how do we find better accounts to target? How do we automate the research that a BDR currently does manually? How do we get a personalized, relevant email in front of a prospect within 24 hours of a trigger event?
RevOps looks backward at what happened. GTM engineering looks forward at what to build.
